New tournament supports breast cancer victims
August 19, 2005
David Krasnoff is known as DK by many Cape Region folks.
If his new charity golf tournament takes off, he’ll also be known as one of the good guys around here.
Erin Keegan Coleman worked as a hostess for Krasnoff for many years, including a stint at the popular Kupchick’s Restaurant on Lewes Beach. Many Cape Region golfers will fondly remember Coleman for her great smile as she worked the post-round dinners there when Krasnoff and the Barcroft Company hosted the Sussex County United Way Tournament several years ago.
Coleman gave birth to her daughter Lydia four years ago, but contracted breast cancer not long thereafter. On April 11, Coleman died from complications of the disease, at age 39.
Krasnoff and Syndee Metz decided to form the Erin Coleman Keegan Foundation, to provide financial relief for the children of single mother cancer patients in the Cape Region. They hope that when Lydia comes of age, she’ll participate in a foundation that is dedicated to her mother’s memory.
To start building the Foundation’s endowment, Krasnoff set up a new charity golf tournament to be held on September 21 at Shawnee Country Club, in Milford. Krasnoff says he plans to run the new event in much the same way as the old United Way event, which was wildly popular during its run.
Krasnoff said they are seeking contributions from local businesses and individuals, in addition to the $125 entry fee for golfers and the $50 tab for those limiting their participation to the dinner. The goal is to solicit enough private endorsements to make the golfing fees completely tax-deductible as a charitable contribution. The net proceeds from the event will be invested. “I’m hoping that we’ll eventually be able to build up a large endowment,” Krasnoff explained.
Checks can be made payable to The Erin Keegan Coleman Foundation, and mailed to Krasnoff’s attention at Kupchick’s Corner Café, 33711 Westcoats Corner, Lewes, DE 19958. For more information, call Krasnoff at 645-6211.
New TV channel features local golf outlets
Comcast, the local cable television outlet in most of the Cape Region, recently added a new Channel 33, focused on local entertainment options and local businesses. The two Cape Region golf stores are taking advantage of the new marketing opportunity.
Ed Larkins of Clubhouse Golf on Rehoboth Avenue Extended said his shop has placed a two-minute infomercial on Channel 33. “It’s nice because it’s long enough to give people a good idea of what we offer. It runs several times a day. We’re now famous,” he laughed. “A little kid in the store the other day pointed at me and said, ‘Dad, look! It’s the guy in the commercial!”
Brett Marshall is also running an extended commercial, for Ruddo’s Golf on Route One. “We’re real happy with the reaction,” he said. “But sometimes our ad runs right after the Clubhouse spot,” Marshall laughed. He also said they’ve made special commercial ad buys to run 30-second spots on the USA Network and TBS, during their coverage of PGA Tour events.
Demo Day
The folks at Ruddo’s Golf have arranged for another club demonstration day at the Rehoboth Golf Park, near the Park-and-Ride lot off Route 1, on Saturday, August 20. Golfers can try out the latest offerings from Titleist and Cobra at the driving range. For more information call Ruddo’s at 227-1520.
