Cape golf team stumbles after first win
April 11, 2008
After dropping their first match of the 2008 season, the Cape Henlopen High School golf team bounced back with their first win on April 3.
The Vikings hosted Delmar High School’s squad on Rehoboth Beach Country Club’s front nine, and won 170-210.
Sophomore Casey Anderson won medallist honors with a 41, his best score of the year thus far. Senior captain Dino Nardo followed Anderson with a 42, while Dan Scrutchfield joined the Viking scorers with a 43. Junior Tristan Karsnitz completed the four-player collection with his 44.
Devon Medd shot a 46 for his second competitive round. “I played pretty good. It started to rain on the sixth hole, and my grips got slippery. I parred 9, though,” said the freshman.
The team’s next match was scheduled for April 7, when they were to host upstate golf powerhouse Salesianum. Over the April 5-6 weekend, however, Scrutchfield fell and hurt a wrist during a skateboarding session, and took himself out of competition for a while.
The injury didn’t help the Vikings, who could have used another low round from Scrutchfield. The Salesianum squad whacked the Cape team, 152-172.
Karsnitz shot the best score for the Vikings that day, with a 42. “I did pretty good. I had several pars and one or two doubles,” he said.Anderson and Medd tied for next best for Cape, with a pair of 44s.
Medd said, “I got into my groove. My swings were smooth. I’m really comfortable with this course, because I play here a lot.”
Anderson said, “It was a good round, considering the freezing conditions. My hands were numb.”
Nardo finished fourth among the Vikings with his 45, and said simply, “It was just cold.”
Sean Toner had an admittedly bad round with his 60, after playing pretty well during the Delmar match. “It was just awful,” he said. Matthew Kersey shot a 53 in his second varsity match.
On April 8, the team traveled to Maple Dale Country Club to play the Dover High Senators. The Vikings slipped again, this time losing 168-184.
Anderson led his team again with a 45.”The course was really wet, and the greens were all different. Some were fast and some were slow. I took a triple bogey on the last hole, and that killed me.”
Nardo and Karsnitz both shot 46, one stroke behind Anderson. Nardo said he couldn’t putt well, and called it a bad round. Karsnitz didn’t feel much better about how he played. “I was one over after four holes. Then I went triple bogey, double bogey and bogey bogey. It was not good. I was hacking around the greens and missing putts.”
Toner was fourth best that day for the Vikings with his 47. “I started bad, with two sevens on the first two holes. Then I came back, I guess. It was my first time playing there, and I was hitting my three-wood to the right.”
Thus far, it sounds like the Vikings are having a little more trouble this season than the team’s usual stellar regular season record. Perhaps the improving weather will also help improve their games.
The squad is to host Indian River High School next, on April 10, and then travels to Shawnee Country Club on April 14 to play the Lake Forest Spartans.
