Cape goes 3-1 in recent matches

The Cape Henlopen High School golf team posted a 3-1 record in the Vikings’ most recent outings, leading to a 10-4 record for the season thus far.
On May 5, the squad traveled to Cripple Creek Country Club and lost to host Indian River High School, 182-194.
Cape’s James Fenstermaker won medalist honors for the match with his 43, but Nick Purnell was the only other Viking to post a score in the 40s, with his 45. Devin Medd struggled to a 52, while Michael Johnson’s 54 finished the team’s scoring for the day.
Cape returned to their home course at Rehoboth Beach Country Club on May 10, and had a much better time of it, beating Woodbridge High School 166-223.
This time Purnell and Fenstermaker tied for medalist honors with a pair of 40s, among their best match performances of the season. Shane Ghigliotty shot a 42, while Medd’s 44 counted for fourth best among the Vikings.
Ghigliotty’s 41 earned medalist honors in another home match May 11, this time against Lake Forest High School, which Cape won by a comfortable 170-219 margin. Medd fired a 42, while Purnell posted a 43. Casey Bittner contributed a 44 for the Vikings’ fourth spot.
The team then traveled to Heritage Shores Golf Club near Bridgeville May 12, for a rescheduled match against Seaford High School. The Vikings won their third match of the week, 168-203, highlighted by Medd’s 39 which earned him medalist honors for the day.
Fenstermaker took second overall and among the Vikings with his 42, followed by Purnell’s 43. Johnson finished the team scoring with his 49.
The Vikings have a single match remaining, against St. Marks High School. Then they prepare for the Conference tournament on May 24, followed by the state high school golf championship, to be held May 31-June 1.
Rookery holding May 20 Demo Day event
Butch Holtzclaw, head golf professional at The Rookery near Milton, is holding a Club Demo day on May 20 (that’s today) from 3-7 p.m. They will feature clubs you can try out at their range from such famous brands as Cleveland, Taylormade, Cobra, and Titleist.
The Rookery gang cleverly timed this event with their Happy Hour Specials, so if you’d like to enjoy an adult beverage while going over your club choices, they’ll be glad to oblige.

Local Club Tournament Results
The Kings Creek Country Club Ladies 18 Hole gang held a “Far Out” tournament on May 12.
It’s called Far Out because the par 5 holes are eliminated from the competition.
Marybeth Merolla won first place, followed by Melanie Pereira in second. Prabha Karapurkar took third place, while Faye Slatcher finished fourth overall.
Rita Musi won closest to the pin honors on the sixteenth hole.
Shawnee Country Club held its annual better ball of partners’ tournament May 7. The event honors the memory of Dave Berezowski, a popular member who died unexpectedly several years ago.
Brian Lord and Rodney Wyatt took first place in the gross category, with their four-under par 66.
Gregg Shockley and Rick Wilson won first place in the net category in the first flight on a match of cards with their 12-under par 58. Terry Johnson and Dr. Lynn Walsh came in second on the match of cards. Lewes Dairy Queen’s magnate Ed Mihm and Tim Gallagher took third place with the same score.
Brian Kellam and Chris Mkowan won first place in the second flight with a 58, followed by Jeremy Golden and Chris Bikowski, who shot a combined 62.
