First Tee raffle for Pebble Beach and other fun places
October 19, 2012
Let’s face it—some golf courses are far more memorable than some others.
Take Pebble Beach, for example. I played my first and thus far only round of golf at the storied Monterey Peninsula layout sixteen years ago. I can still give you a shot-by-shot description of that magical afternoon.
Because I value friendships, as well as random acquaintances, I won’t go through that recapitulation with you in this column.
However, I will point out that you still have a few days left to enter a First Tee of Delaware fundraising raffle for your own chance to play Pebble Beach.
Each $100 raffle ticket earns the purchaser a chance to join three other golfers for a great vacation. Winners will play a round at Pebble and a second round at Spyglass Hill, which is one of the two other golf courses that host the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament each winter.
The winners will have three days’ and two nights’ accommodations at the Lodge at Pebble Beach, with airfare and ground transportation also thrown into the mix. To help with tipping the caddie and other necessaries, the winners will also be given $1,000 in spending cash. The total prize is valued at $15,000.
The drawing takes place at Ed Oliver Golf Course in Wilmington at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23, but you do not have to be present to win.
Only 400 raffle tickets will be sold, and remaining tickets are dwindling.
The second prize is also tempting. Those winners will earn a two-night’s stay and two rounds of playing privileges for the Stonewall Resort in West Virginia, along with $300 in spending money.

Kings Creek Country Club Ladies Invitational
On Thursday, Oct. 11, Kings Creek Country Club near Rehoboth hosted a region-wide Ladies Invitational Tournament, in both 9- and 18-hole categories. Over 120 golfers participated.
The format for the 18-hole event called for the two best ball of each foursome, in both net and gross categories. Gail Warner, Colleen Hacker, Sandy Scitti, and Mary Renshaw, from Ocean City Golf & Country Club, won first place for gross scores with a four-over-par 146.
Donna Pierce, Perry Drevo, Diane Herndon, and Sandy Bunting took second place in gross with their combined 150, only four strokes back. Robbin Murray, Retta Rose Frampton, Diane Stetina, and Marsh McLaurin took third place honors with their 155.
In the net category, the Kings Creek foursome of Anita Pettitt, Pattie Magee, Judy Wetzel, and Julie Dickson finished in first place net with a 33-under-par 109. Their combined score was only a stroke ahead of the second place team, comprised of Faye Slatcher, Jeannine Doane, Prabhat Karpurkar, and Carol Simon.
Tricia Ritthaler, Linda Outlaw, Sherry Pie, and Rita Musi came in third net, with their combined score of 117.
The Ladies 9-Hole Invitational played the Kings Creek back nine for the day, and used a different scoring format. Their teams used the two best balls of four on the par 3s, one best ball on the par 4s, and one best ball on the par 5s, thus putting a premium on each teams’ ability to score on the short holes.
Peggy Kelly, Karen Price, Jeanette Darling, and Sharon Somers, from Chester River, won the net tournament with their combined 27.
Second place went to the team of Evelyn Vanderloo, Noreen Buzerak, Mary Beth Merolla, and Iren Clenney, who scored a combined 33. Carolyn Shriver, Chris Sullivan, Sally Horvath, and Holly Holmes finished in third place with their team score of 34.
