Second Annual Rehoboth Club Tournament another success
June 7, 2013
Turnabout is fair play, in golf and in life.
A mixed team of amateur and professional golfers from Rehoboth Beach Country Club won last year’s inaugural Rehoboth Cup Tournament, pitting their handpicked squad against a similarly chosen group of golfers from their adjacent rivals at Kings Creek Country Club.
On May 18 and 19, the gang from Kings Creek CC returned the favor, beating the RBCC bunch in the tournament’s second annual competition.
Each team called upon the services of eighteen club members, along with 2 golf pros. This year’s final score of 51-39 was no indication of how close the teams were after the first day, when only a single point separated the two groups.
The first day’s round, held at Rehoboth Beach CC, used a Better Ball of Partners match play format. Single points could be earned for the front nine, back nine, and the overall 18-hole total. Rehoboth’s teams took the early lead, but the finishing pairs for Kings Creek brought their team to a single point lead going into the second day.
For the second round, held at Kings Creek, the format called for all individual matches, using the same three point scoring framework. The Kings Creek members finished strong to complete a fairly comprehensive victory, twelve points ahead of Rehoboth CC.
Kings Creek member Craig Karsnitz noted the strong play of the club pros. He said. “One of the Rehoboth pros had three straight birdies, and he only made up one hole on Kings Creek’s Chris Krueger for those holes. They were really impressive.”
Kings Creek Head Golf Professional Kevin Wiest said, “This Cup event is a great rivalry among friends. It is a testament to the quality of the two golf courses, and the dedication of their respective members. We look forward to participating in it for years to come.”
This tournament sounded like it was a lot of fun for the participants, and the concept can be readily transferred to other venues. For example, most of the regular players at the Rookery public golf courses tend to concentrate their play on one or the other of the two courses. A similar cup competition could be held among the Rookery bunch, depending on which course the members called “home.”
