Benefit tournament season comes back to Cape Region
October 3, 2014
Fall in the Cape Region brings with it a return to golf tournament fundraisers on local courses.
In the next few weeks, two tournaments benefiting junior golfers should have a full slate of players, or at least one can hope for that happy result.
The Delaware State Golf Association is holding its annual college scholarship fundraiser tournament on Oct. 6, at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. The best one ball of four net format begins with lunch and then a 12:30 shotgun start.
The $150 per player fee includes the round, a cocktail hour, prizes, and the opportunity to part with even more money during a silent auction in the evening.

Supporters of the Cape Henlopen High School golf team are holding a scramble format tournament Oct. 20 at Rookery South, beginning with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. At only $80 per golfer, the fee includes the range, green fees, cart, dinner, and door prizes.
Mulligans will be on sale, of course, and there will be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. Entry deadline for the Viking tournament is October 10.

Hole in One during Twilight Golf
Rehoboth Beach Country Club member Carole Schagrin scored a hole-in-one during the club’s last Twilight Golf event of the season, Sept. 19. She used her 7-wood on the 94-yard fifth hole for her third ever ace.
Charlie Schuyler, PGA and head golf professional with Rehoboth Beach Country Club, said that the entire field of 48 participants celebrated Schagrin’s achievement. “Players in this fun, scramble-format tournament also enjoyed a visit from some local deer” in the early evening light.
Cape Region Tournament Results
Rehoboth Beach Country Club hosted its 18 Hole Ladies Invitational Tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The Kings Creek Country Club team of Cory Warther, Dorrie Spilman, Vicki Tull, and Diane Herndon won the event, featuring 80 participants from clubs from around the Cape Region in a two best balls of four format.
Tull and Herndon also shared the prize for Longest Drive with a rare tie. Donna Kostens won the putting championship, and the foursome of Karen Segrson, Colleen Hacker, Sandy Scitti, and Poppy Granite won first place gross honors.
RBCC also hosted its first ever Talon Cup Tournament Sept. 26-27. The men’s Member-Guest event consisted of 38 two-man teams playing five 9-hole matches over two days. Each team competed in a flight, with the winner of each flight participating in a shoot out on Rehoboth Beach Country Club’s signature 19th hole.
Louis Capano, Jr. and his partner BJ Mitchell took the title by dominating their competition, almost hitting a hole-in-one in the final round.
“This format made for an exciting couple of days of play,” said Pat Mastrian, PGA and assistant golf professional at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. “It is popular at many clubs for their Member-Guest events, but it is the first time we’ve tried it here and our members loved it.”
The Rookery held its second annual men’s Member-Member tournament Sept. 27-28. The one best ball of two event began on the par-70 Rookery North Course on Saturday morning, and finished on the par-71 Rookery South Course on Sunday afternoon.
Tim Gallagher and Bob DeHaven won first place with 64-58 net 122 total. John Eustis and Bob Owens earned second place with their 59-65 net 124 finish. Larry Thomas and Rick Elton finished in third place, two strokes back with their 62-64 total, in a tie with Bill Barnard and Eugene Burdine (60-66).
The father-son combination of Phil and Kyle Strassle earned a tie for fifth place (68-62) with Jim Hutchins and yours truly, at 66-64-130.
All that practice is beginning to pay off.
