Cape golf team continues winning ways
May 1, 2015
The Cape Henlopen High School Viking golf team earned a hat trick of victories over Henlopen Conference teams, and also showed some real improvement in their golf scores.
On April 27 the Vikings hosted the Lake Forest Spartans at Kings Creek Country Club, winning 173-249.
Mason Jones won medalist honors for the day with a two-over par 38 on the Kings Creek front nine. “I started out well, and was 2-under after three holes. I began on the second hole, and birdied it and the fourth hole. I had some bad putts on the eighth hole, but otherwise it was a good round,” he said.
Matt Zehner’s 41 included four pars and five bogeys. “I drove it well today, and had a couple up and downs for pars. I hit into one bunker and saved par from there. My chip shots were good,” he said.
Maddie Baptiste had her best competitive round of the season, with a fine 43. “I was hitting off the tee really well today,” she said. “Some of my putts weren’t falling, and that’s where some of the bogeys came from.”
Ben Young, playing in his first varsity round of the year, shot a 51, as did Rachel Hagan, so one of those scores counted toward the team total.
The Vikings had their best team-scoring total April 24, winning 164-186 against Milford High School at The Rookery South’s par-35 front nine.
Mike DeStasio shot a three-over par 38, earning co-medalist honors with Milford’s Kyle Strassle. DeStasio said, “I birdied the second hole, and had four bogeys and four pars.”
Jones was happy with his 40 for the day, one of his best scores for the season. “I’m getting there,” he said.
Darren Branner contributed with his 41, while Zehner’s 45 completed the team scoring. “I hit my driver really well that day, except for one bad tee shot. My putting was a little rough,” Zehner said.
Head coach Claudio Smarrelli said, “I was really, really impressed by the course conditions at Rookery South. They were as good as I have ever seen them.”
Quincy Duckworth’s 43 won medalist honors for the Vikings in the team’s 189-210 victory over Indian River High School April 23, at Cripple Creek Country Club.
“The greens were really fast, and it was windy. The course was in good shape. I parred the first four holes and had a birdie. My putter was hot,” Duckworth said.
Jones shot a 47, while DeStasio struggled a bit for his 48. “I hit my first drive O.B., and was consistently bogey and double-bogey from there,” DeStasio said. Commenting on the green speed and the winds, he said he “nudged” his first putt on his first par-3 from above the hole, only to watch it speed past the hole.
Baptiste completed the team scores that day with her 51. “I had a blister and couldn’t wear my shoes, so I played barefoot,” she said. “I had such a hard time with the greens. They were terribly fast.”
The Vikings next two opponents are Delmarva Christian, at Rehoboth Beach CC, and Seaford High, to be played at Heritage Shores GC.
