DSGA Scholarship Winners Announced
The Delaware State Golf Association Scholarship Committee annually awards college scholarships to deserving students throughout the state and surrounding areas.
Three Cape Region businessmen founded the Scholarship Fund in 1986: R. Gerald Medd, Robert McCurry, and former Rehoboth Beach CC head pro Ron Barrows. Applicants are selected for scholarships based on academic performance, community service, and their connection to golf.
This year’s awards went to six students, including two from the Cape Region. Liam Murphy, of Hockessin, Delaware was awarded a $4,500 per year scholarship for 4 years. A four-year letterman for a highly successful Salesianum golf team, Murphy will attend Pennsylvania State University.

Philadelphia Junior Tour comes to Cape Region
Things were a little different this year at the Rehoboth Beach Junior Open, held June 22 at Rehoboth Beach CC.
The long-running tournament, now affiliated with the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour, used morning tee times for the dozens of golfers, in lieu of the traditional lunch and afternoon shotgun start. Considering the hot weather, that switch may have helped several golfers handle the challenging conditions.
William Mitchell of Moorestown, NJ won the Boys 16-18 event. Brock Maloomian and Matt Zehner were the local competitors, and did a nice job of representing Cape Henlopen High School. Maloomian tied for 16th and Matthew Zehner finished in the 24th spot. Teague Olewiler, of Lewes, finished in 7th place in the 12 & Under 9-Hole Division.
The Tour shifted south to Cripple Creek CC June 23, with Zehner and Maloomian finishing in a tie for 10th with their 81s. Kings Creek CC played host to the Junior Tour June 24, in excellent weather conditions. Zehner’s 78 combined with the prior day’s 81 to earn him a tie for 7th place, with Maloomian’s 81-88 finish earning his 10th place spot.
