Openings remain for Meals on Wheels Tournament Sept. 14
September 11, 2015
Playing spots are still available for those interested in participating in the 38th Annual Harry Derrickson Memorial Golf Tournament, held Sept. 14 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
As in past years, this is a huge fundraiser for Meals on Wheels of Lewes & Rehoboth, and they could use the help. In 2014 MOWL&R provided over 100,000 meals to over 290 hungry seniors, with the support of hundreds among the community and Cape Region businesses.
The event starts with a Pre-Tournament dinner party, including a silent and live auction, on Sunday, Sept. 13 at Rehoboth Beach CC, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The tournament itself has a shotgun start set for 12:30 p.m. on the 14th. Tournament packages (foursome at $725, singles for $195) include 2 mulligans per player, a dinner ticket, and entry into the longest drive, closest to the hole, and hole-in-one contests. Additional dinner party tickets can be bought for $95.
Registration can be done online at www.beachmeals.com, or by email to kkeuski@comcast.net. Mailing it in at this point is probably not a good idea, no disrespect to the Postal Service intended. For more information call 302-645-7449.
Not the old set of golf clubs anymore
A random check of the golf bags at the putting green just off the first hole of the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open in Lancaster, PA showed the effect of improvements in technology at the long and short end.
LPGA player Sakura Yokomine of Japan used four wedges and no irons stronger than a six-iron, along with her driver, putter, and a mix of hybrids and fairway woods.
Kyle Morrison, Mo Martin’s caddie, said the 2014 Women’s British Open champion starts with a 5-iron and goes down to three wedges, including a pitching wedge, a 52-degree gap wedge, and a 58-degree sand wedge. Martin’s fairway woods include 3-, 5-, 7-, and 9-woods.
Symetra Tour golfer Liz Nagel’s irons began with a 6-iron and included four wedges, ending at the 58-degree. She used two hybrids along with her driver and 3-wood. The hybrids are fairly strong, set at 19 and 22 degrees.
Worth Blackwelder, caddie for LPGA golfer Kim Kaufman and the father of LPGA golfer Mallory Blackwelder, said Kaufman uses a driver, 3-wood, 21-degree 7-wood, a 4-hybrid, and three wedges, set at 50, 54, and 58 degrees.
Bogey golfers of the male variety should review what they have in their golf bags. Most should take a hint from the LPGA members, who hit the ball at least as far and usually farther.
If your 3, 4, and/or 5-irons look just as good as the day they were bought 10 years ago, you might be amazed what switching to hybrids or more fairway woods could do for your game.
