Cape Region Christmas golf gift opportunities
December 18, 2015
Cape Region retail outlets continue to do some serious business this holiday season, thanks in no small part to the fall tourist trade, combined with the active shopping by the locals.
If you’re not finished yet, there’s still time to find something nice among the golf courses, the local golf store, and pro shops for your golf-loving friends and family members.
Ruddo’s Golf, on Route One next to the Ocean Boulevard Furniture store, remains the only Cape Region store dedicated to golf. PGA Professional Bret Marshall runs the place, and filled me in on some of the specials they are running through Christmas.
Men’s and Women’s short sleeve tops are on sale at fifty percent off. Outerwear garments, such as wind shirts, are on sale from 30% to 50 % off.
Most of the golf shoes, of which there are dozens and dozens, have $20 knocked off their normal prices. The golf bags are on sale at up to twenty percent off.
The sales also extend to balls and clubs. For example, Marshall said they will sell Titleist Pro V1 and ProV1X golf balls for only $39.99.
Marshall said they also have discount prices on woods, irons, and putters. In addition, they do a brisk business in gift cards, which are great for those who might be reluctant to pick out a particular item.
The golf store will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, with expanded hours as Christmas approaches. For more information, call Ruddo’s at 302-703-2555.
For planning purposes, you should also keep in mind that for the golf course or pro shop gift-buying opportunities, daytime hours are the rule. In addition, the sooner you go visit, the better the selections will be.
American Classic Golf Club lies just off Postal Lane, near Route 1, and offers 9 holes on its executive-length layout. Its number is 302-703-6662. Open from 8 a.m. till dusk, weather permitting, the pro shop offers merchandise as well as gift certificates.
The Cape Region’s full-size public golf courses, including Baywood Greens and The Rookery (South and North), will also be happy to provide additional suggestions.
For example, the Rookery features pro shops at both North and South Courses, both with a variety of club and ball offerings. Shoes, outerwear, summer golf shirts, and golf bags are now 25% off. Limited selections of golf shirts at Rookery North are separately sale priced at $25 to $35. At both locations, as well as the Rookery’s website, gift certificates are available, along with the opportunity to buy a single or a block of lessons from each of the golf pros that serve The Rookery’s courses.
The Baywood Greens pro shop carries several well-known golf brands, such as Titleist, Callaway, Mizuno, and Cobra. Ashworth, Cutter & Buck, Oxford, EP Pro, Nick Price, Adidas, and Under Armour are among the golf clothing lines to be found there. In case you’re not sure what to buy, you can also buy gift cards at the shop as well as online at their website. For more information, call the Baywood Pro Shop at 302-947-9800.
Don’t forget the other public golf courses in the Cape Region, all of whom would welcome some Christmas-related opportunities to serve you.
Stenger’s Shamrock Par 3 Golf, on Saw Mill Road, is a pleasant par-3 layout in the “suburbs” of Milton. For more information, phone 302-684-1808 or go to ShamrockPar3Golf.com.
The Pelican Grille restaurant at Marsh Island Golf Club, on Camp Arrowhead Road, is hugely popular with Cape Region locals, who also enjoy the challenging short layout. It can be reached at 302-945-4653.
Midway Par 3 remains in operation as a longtime Cape Region favorite outside Lewes on Route One, at 302-645-7955.
For the Cape Region golfers who tell you they already have everything they need or want, you might consider making a donation in their names to the First Tee of Delaware. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, over 13,000 young people have been served statewide by the program, which emphasizes character building, life skills, and the healthy habits that golf can impart.
At the organization’s website, thefirstteedelaware.org, you can make your contribution toward the official wish list, such as training materials, a bag, and shirt for one child ($75).
For more information, call The First Tee at 302—384-8759.
