Brockstedt sisters bow out at Drive Chip & Putt subregional

The Brockstedt family’s dream of a return to Augusta National was put on hold after the Aug. 14 subregional qualifying round for the Drive Chip & Putt Championship.
Competing in the girls 10-11 group, Hudson Brockstedt finished in a tie for seventh place in her first attempt at this level of the national junior event. Her sister Sawyer, who made it to Augusta last spring for the finals, finished in fifth place in the girls 12-13 category, out of the running this time.

Apparently undaunted, Sawyer traveled to the Stockton Seaview Resort in Galloway Township, NJ, and won the Girls-11 group category in a U.S. Kids Regional tournament on Sept. 1-2. She shot consecutive rounds of 4-over par for her second tournament win in a U.S. Kids event.
Sawyer’s finish on the 18thin the second round was also the point when she overtook her playing partner. At two strokes down, Brockstedt’s second shot on the par-5 landed on the right side of a fescue mound, hole-high. Her competitor struggled a bit with her drive and took five strokes to reach the green. Brockstedt’s chip “hit the downslope over the mound and rolled to about five feet,” and she made the birdie putt. The other golfer’s two-putt for double bogey gave Brockstedt the win.
“I didn’t really have my A game,” she said. “It was more like an A- or B+. We played a shorter course than I usually do.”
Continued playing in these national and regional tournaments means that Brockstedt now sees some familiar faces on the fairways. She said she knew “ten of the twenty” in her age group at the Bay Course event.
The sixth-grader at Sussex Academy is hitting the books for now, but expects to return to significant junior golf tournament action during the winter holidays.
Fall Simulator Golf Leagues to start Sept. 18
The folks at Out of the Sand Golf and Sport Simulators at the Midway Shopping Center are signing up players and teams for the Fall Golf Leagues, beginning Sept. 18.
There are three categories for the eight-week events. Tuesday or Thursday night leagues are 9-holes each at $25 per week, while the Wednesday night league is set for 18 holes at $40 per week. The Friday Night Couples league is $40 per couple.

Epworth UMC tournament helps three local programs
The Simpson Men’s Group of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth is holding its sixth annual golf fundraiser tournament Oct. 6 at the American Classic Golf Club in Midway.
The event supports local programs providing food and other resources for those in need in the Lewes and Rehoboth Communities. This year’s beneficiaries are the Epworth UMC Food and Love Program, the Immanuel Shelter, and the Community Resource Center.
The tournament takes place in two flights, beginning with the morning outing. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with a scramble start at 9:30 a.m. The afternoon round begins with registration at 12:30 p.m. and the scramble start at 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be served between the flights, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The $50 entry fee ($60 with cart) covers the golf, lunch, and prizes, including a hole in one contest for a car provided by the Auto Gallery in Lewes.

Selbyville VFC fundraiser tournament Oct. 11
The Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company is holding its 11thannual golf tournament Oct. 11 at Cripple Creek Country Club near Ocean View. The event helps defray the VFC’s operating costs of protecting its service district.
The shotgun start for the scramble is at 9:00 a.m. The $90 entry fee includes the golf and cart, lunch, prizes, and beverages during the round. Selbyville Holly Kia is making a car available for a hole in one contest on the 7thhole.

Mulligans Pointe crowns senior and super-senior champions
The Mulligans Pointe Ladies 18-Hole group held its Senior/Super-Senior Champions tournament Sept. 4.
Brenda Lewes won first place gross in the Senior category, with Sue Ahern in second.
Sue Brady won first place net among the Seniors, with Karen Feuchtenberger in second.
Linda Townsend won first place gross in the Super-Senior category, with Kathy Hudak in second.
Dee Prillaman won first place net among the Super-Seniors, with Carol Love in second.
Local club competition results
The Mulligans Pointe Ladies 18-Hole group played a two-man team game Sept. 11, using combined net scores. Kathy Feuchtenberger and Kathy Hudak won the contest.
The Kings Creek CC Ladies 9-Hole group played a Low Putts game Aug. 29. Beth Magnus won first place, with Tina Brown and Sue Eisenbrey tied for second. Trish Galioto, Karen Harrington, and Kathy Nave tied for fourth. Carole Ellison won the closest to the pin contest on the second hole.
