DSGA Scholarship Winners Announced

The Delaware State Golf Association Scholarship Fund announced this year’s winners of college stipends via email on June 23.
An award committee reviews applications filed each spring. Scholarship winners demonstrate high academic achievement, community service, and a love of golf.
Christina Carroll of Bear, DE won the 2020 Robert McCurry Award. She will receive $6,000 for her first year of college, up to $24,000 total.
Haley Quickel of Middletown, DE won the second place R. Gerald Medd Award, worth $5,000 per year. Patrick Gogarty of Dagsboro, DE won the third place Ron Barrows Award of $4,000 per year. Colby Hook of Selbyville, DE won the fourth place James Powell Award, worth $3,000. Eleanor Harrison won the fifth place Bernie Reid Award of $2,000 per year.
Since 1986 the DSGA Scholarship Fund awarded over $1.3 million to recipients from throughout Delaware. To sustain the program the DSGA runs a major fundraiser tournament at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. This year’s event is currently scheduled for Sept. 14.

Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth offers early bird special for October tournament
The 43d annual Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth Harry Derrickson Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for October 12 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
It is typically one of the hotter tickets among Cape Region golf fundraisers, and the pandemic increased the event’s importance for the popular charity. As noted in the organization’s recent announcement, “Due to the coronavirus, we were forced to postpone all of our other major fundraising events this year.”
The event begins with a lunch at 11:00 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee covers the lunch, gift bag, awards ceremony, beer, and light fare, including on-course beverages.
There is an early bird registration discount until Aug. 31, at $165 single player or $610 for a team of four. After Sept. 1, the entry fees are $175 single player and $650 for four golfers.

Argolf putters and clubs aim for high-end market

Most golfers can name five or six major club manufacturers, but quite a few other participants in that marketplace operate on a smaller scale.
For example, in 2010 the French company Argolf began offering a series of finely milled putters, based on metals and material workmanship derived from the aeronautical industry. Each putter was made from a single metal block of aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium. The company continues to use that method and does well in the premium sector.
There are now 14 different putter models, in blade, half-mallet, or full mallet designs. The base prices range from $199 to $389 depending on the model selected. For an added investment each putter can also be customized with different color choices for paint fill, or etchings of text or graphics.
Last year Argolf began selling its AR F18 forged irons, a CNC milled steel design. With the success of that model, the company expanded its iron offerings in 2020 with its forged carbon steel AR-F15s and the milled AR-M18s, created from stainless steel. The irons are available only through authorized club fitters, and the company offers several different stock shaft options.

At the 2020 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL I met with Argolf spokesperson Tiffany DiPanni. She explained that Argolf now operates a performance center in Jupiter, FL. Customers can make appointments to go there as part of the putter fitting process. She said the company also has relationships with professional club fitters throughout the country.
DiPanni said Argolf does particularly well in the women’s golf market, where its wide range of personalization or decoration options is particularly popular.
For the Cape Region, the closest Argolf dealers are at Atlantic City Country Club and Galloway National Golf Club in southern New Jersey, or at Golfdom in McLean, VA.
Local club competition results
The Mulligans Pointe Ladies 18-hole group played a Putting Around game June 23. In this format, chip-ins counted for 5 points, 1-putt holes earned 3 points, 2-putt holes earned 1 point, and a 3-putt hole knocked 2 points off the total.
Gail Lagullo won first place, with Diane Braver in second and Sue Ahern in third.
The golfing ladies of Kings Creek Country Club returned to their weekly contests June 18 with a 1-1-2 game. This team format uses one best ball net for the par 3s and 4s, and the two best net scores for the par 5s.
Wendy Bunce, Sara Cavendish, Faye Slatcher, and Joanne Yurik won first place in the first flight, with Donna Deely, Nancy Froome, Barbara Hines, Marsha McLaurin taking second. Ruth Lauver, Judy Wetzel, Leslie McClintick, and Mary Ann Veitch came in third.
Ana Dittel, Linda Outlaw, Denise Stewart, and Cory Warther won the second flight, followed by Sally Chamberlain, Gale DiBona, Anne Farley, and Atom Irwin. Jen Flinchbaugh, Vicky Martina, Eileen Riddell, and Rae Von Doehren finished in third.
