Delaware college golf teams suspend fall tournament season

There is no Blue Hen Invitational Tournament at Rehoboth Beach Country Club this October.
You can blame the pandemic.
Both the University of Delaware and Delaware State University suspended all athletic competitions for the upcoming fall season, including golf.
Rick McCall, Jr., head coach for the DSU Hornets women’s team, said, “These are crazy times we’re living in. It’s disappointing that my first full recruiting class has been held up until next spring.”
Patty Post, Director of Golf Programs for UD, said, “We have invited our athletes back to campus to play and practice as a team. We hope to have a productive fall to be prepared for our spring competition.”
McCall said the two Canadians on his team expect to return to Dover by Aug. 12 for the mandatory two-week quarantine before formal practice begins. Facing visa challenges, two of his Thai student-athletes will return to campus next spring. They are expected to take courses and practice this fall at home.
Post said most of her international players will be able to make it back to campus. “We are saddened not to have a season at UD this fall, but it is for the health and safety of our athletes.”

I follow my own 90-degree rule concerning golf in the summertime. When it’s that hot I will ride a cart instead of walking.
During a recent round it wasn’t quite steamy enough to invoke the rule for the front nine, but I was sure I would ride the back nine. I didn’t, however, and for that decision I credit my comfortable new ECO-Polo shirt courtesy of All 19 Holes, an ecologically conscious California apparel company.
The polyester performance fabric does a good job of moisture wicking and features a flat back honeycomb mesh finish that adds a nice detail. Depending on size, the manufacturing process for each shirt recycles 8 to 12 plastic bottles retrieved from the ocean, a lake or a landfill. The fabric is also finished with Microblok for anti-microbial odor protection.

Heflin wins 2020 DWGA Women’s Amateur

Congratulations to high school senior Rylie Heflin for winning the Delaware Women’s Golf Association 2020 Women’s Amateur July 15 at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover.
The Wilmington resident shot 75 and 73 in the two-day 36-hole competition. Josephine Wellons, a sophomore also from Wilmington, earned runner-up honors.
Bernie Weed won the first flight, with Theresa Hoffman in second. Jeannine Doane won the second flight with Rosella Champion in second. Maria Collier won the third flight, and Kathy Welsh finished second.

The Kings Creek CC Ladies 9-Hole group played a T’s and F’s game July 22, which totals the scores from the holes that start with a T or F.
Sandy Neverett won first place gross in the first flight, with Marjorie Adis winning first net. Lindsey Corydon took second and Darci Whitehead finished third.
Deb Chase won first place gross in the second flight, while Margaret Connors won first net. Nancy Derrickson finished second and Linda Miniscalco came in third.
Stephanie Roash won first place gross for the third flight, with Carolyn Shriver taking first net. Noreen Buzerak and Deb D’Orazio tied for second.
The Mulligans Pointe Ladies 18-Hole group played a Fewest Putts game July 21. Maxine Ansbach, Brenda Lewis, Pam Pichola, and Barb Willin won first place. Karen Feuchtenberger, Peggy Claussem, and Linda Townsend combined with a blind draw for second. Susan Brady, Kathy Hudak, Pat Short, and JoAnn Zorb finished third.
The Kings Creek CC Ladies 18-Hole group played a Baker’s Dozen game July 16, where the players’ best 13 scores are used.
Jen Flinchbaugh won first place gross in the first flight, with GaleDibona winning first place net. Wendy Maclay finished second net and Erin Reid came in third.
Donna Deely took first place gross in the second flight and Sally McGovern won first place net. Cynthia Robinson came in second and Mary Ann Veitch finished third.
Denise Sills won first place gross in the third flight, while Melanie Pereira won first place net. Jeannine Doane finished second and Ruth Lauver came in third.
Marty Jaxheimer finished first place gross in the fourth flight, with Sheree Mixell taking first place net. Linda Eicher came in second and Margaret Moore finished third.
Robbie Monkman won first place gross in the fifth flight, with Eileen Riddell winning first place net. Debbie Grant finished second and Carol Loewen came in third.
