Cape Region charity tournaments in full swing
May 14, 1999
Over 136 ladies enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures at Sussex Pines Country Club on May 7, at the Fourth Annual Pink Ribbon Classic for breast cancer awareness. Delores Springer, who led the volunteers, described the day as “gorgeous.”
The Pink Ribbon Classic raises funds for breast cancer detection and assistance. The net proceeds are given to Mammography of Delaware, and supports ultrasound diagnostic tests for women 40 and under with no other resources for the vital procedure.
Corporate sponsors this year included Hercules and Zeneca; many other businesses also contributed. This year’s tournament was dedicated to Nancy I. Wright, a Hercules employee who succumbed to the disease at age 49 on May 7, 1998.
This was the first year the tournament was at Sussex Pines. The competition used a better ball of partners, net and gross category format.
Ann Lewis and Daisey Hudson won the gross on a match of cards with an 80. Terry Daisey and Bernie Reid took second. Sandy Bunting and Judy Slacum won third with their combined 82, completing a Sussex Pines sweep in the gross score division.
Hercules employees Arlene Bincsik and Rene Tomczak took net honors with a 62. Donna Lynch and Debbie Griffith were second with a 63, with a match of cards breaking their tie with Retta Rose Frampton and Marilyn Macklin.
Other winners were as follows:
Closest to the pin, Hole No. 3: Arlene Bincsik, 7 feet 7 inches
Closest to the pin, Hole No. 6: Patty Marvel, 12 feet 9 inches
Closest to the pin, Hole No. 13: Peg Veasey, 19 inches
Meals on Wheels
The Lewes and Rehoboth Meals on Wheels Tournament also benefited from great weather on May 10 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Seventeen teams competed in a slingshot handicap format for the local charity that serves homebound residents in the Lewes, Harbeson, and Rehoboth areas.
Joe Shockley’s team won low net honors with a 51, joined by Lee Turek, Wayne Dukes, and Jay McManus. Herb Shupard led the low gross team with a 59, along with Lynn Cuthbert, Jay Smith, and Dick Buckaloo.
Gunther Brand, John Chanaud, Amanda Carpenter, and Joanne Goudounis took second place in the net competition with a 53.
The third, fourth, and fifth net places were determined by a match of cards from team scores of 54. Mark Berryman, W. T. Hill, Roy Mitchell, and Jack Guenveur took third; Dick Bryan, Charles Howard, John Merryman, and Randy Kenworthy were fourth; and Jim Cerullo, Frank Cannetelli, Chuck Vinellette, and Scott Morris combined for fifth place.
Other winners were as follows:
Long Drive, Women—Judy Holtzclaw
Long Drive, Men—Dick Buckaloo
Closest to the pin, Hole No. 19, Women—Karen Wagamon–who at least made it to the fringe.
Closest to the pin, Hole No. 19, Men—Joe Shockley, 11 feet 7 inches
Short putts
Cape Henlopen’s golf team ran into the Dover buzz saw on May 5, losing 154-179 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Joey Maxted took medallist honors for the Senators with a 36. Dan Prettyman led the Vikings with a 38, followed by Adam Talley (46), Beau Marr (47), and Mark Johnson (48). Co-head coach Jerry Dorneman sighed, “Not a good outing.”
It didn’t get any better May 10, when the team lost to Milford 159-170 at Shawnee Country Club. Jon Jones won co-medallist honors for Milford with a 38. Prettyman tied Jones, but the rest of the Vikings couldn’t pull through. Josh Marr’s 42, Johnson’s 43, Beau Marr’s 47, and Croce’s 47 led to a Cape season record of 8-6.
