Christmas golf sales still an option
December 19, 2008
Even with less than a week to go before Christmas Day, there are still quite a few options to find a nice gift for the Cape Region golfer on your list.
Considering the currently dicey economic situation, the local golf merchants and golf pros will be very glad to see you.
Bret Marshall of Ruddo’s Golf said his shop on Route One near Munchy Branch Road will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Christmas Eve, when he expects to close up a little early.
“A lot of our stuff is on sale, and at great prices,” the PGA professional said recently. “They’re running at $39.99 and on down. Lots of them have the new performance fabrics, including Adidas, Greg Norman, and Callaway.”
“Most of our clubs are also on sale, such as this year’s TaylorMade Burner drivers at $199. Our golf bags are ten percent off, and we have a lot of shoes on sale, from Footjoy and Nike,” Marshall said.
“We’ve had a good year with several items,” he added. “The NFL and college team logo golf balls, divot tools, and towels always do well for folks looking for a gift. The other things that did well this year were the Sky Caddie GPS systems. One displays in color, and the other in black and white.”
Marshall also noted that he usually does a brisk business in gift certificates, for those who like to give their golfers the option to pick out something for themselves. In addition, Ruddo’s offers club re-gripping services, which is a very good off-season option for players seeking to be ready for next year. You can reach Bret at 302-227-1520.
Ed Larkin of Clubhouse Golf, on Rehoboth Avenue Extended just outside Rehoboth Beach, is offering a wide range of year-end closeout specials. “Our iron sets are on sale for 35 percent off, and all our shoes are on sale for 25 percent off,” Larkin said.
“Pretty much everything else in the store is on sale for ten percent off,” he said. Clubhouse Golf also offers re-gripping services and gift certificates.
The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the holidays, and you can reach Ed at 302-227-3347.
Butch Holtzclaw, the head golf professional at The Rookery near Milton, said that the number of rounds played on the popular public layout stayed pretty stable this year. As for the pro shop sales, that was another story, one matched by sporting goods stores throughout the country.
“We still have quite a bit of stuff here, and most of it is on sale,” Holtzclaw said. “Our shoes are 25 percent off, for example. The golf bags are 25 percent off, and all our equipment is on sale, too,” he said.
The Rookery also sells lesson packages, gift certificates, and re-grippings. The pro shop is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting, and you can check by calling 302-684-3000.
Tony Hollerback is the head golf professional at Baywood Greens, the “exclusively public” golf course near Long Neck. He said they’re also running a series of Christmas sales, including 25 percent off on two racks of summer shirts, as well as winter-related apparel. The clothing lines include Cutter & Buck, Page and Tuttle, Ashworth, and Izod.
He also said they’re selling several brands of golf clubs, from makers such as Mizuno, MacGregor, and Nike. As for golf shoes, Baywood is selling Nikes and three lines of Footjoys, including the Greenjoys, Contours, and eComfort brands.
Baywood is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can be reached at 302-947-9800.
Don’t forget to also check out the options at the private club pro shops in the Cape Region. They specialize in logo items, which are always a popular gift option for golfers.
