Club Championships all over Cape Region

The last few weeks of the summer mark the championship season at Cape Region golf courses. That dovetails nicely with the fact that now is when golfers are usually playing as well as their talents and patience will take them.
On Sept. 6 and 7, the gang at Sussex Pines Country Club held their championship tourneys. Linda Townsend won the club’s Ladies Senior Club Championship, with Susan Shockley winning first net for the two-day competition. Kathy Hudak won first place gross, and Nancy Riale took second place net.
In the Men’s Senior Club Championship, Scott Lanham was crowned this year’s Champion. Brian Hayes won first place in the gross category, with Scott Baker in first place net. In the second flight, David Layfield won first place gross, followed by Blasé Gavlick in second. Tom Love won first net.
Chris Messick won first place gross in the third flight, with Frank Gordy taking second. Charles Cordrey finished in first place net in this category.
The Rookery held its second annual Club Championship Sept. 6-7, again using the South and North Courses for the 36-hole contest.
Scott Shockley earned this year’s Club Championship with a four-over par 145 in the Championship Flight. Charles Gouert took first place in the flight, five strokes back, and Bob Burd took second. Burd also won the senior flight.
Tim Gallagher won first place in the first flight, with Mike Poulis taking second and Brett Warran coming in third. Gallagher also tied for third place in the senior flight with Bob Romberger.
Joe Shockley finished first in the second flight, with Jim Lingo in second and Ken Wheatley in third. Shockley also took second in the senior flight.
Dan Simmons won the third flight, with Ken Miller in second and Jake Silbereisen in third. In the fourth flight, Bill Baydalla finished first, with Jim Broadhurst in second.
Romberger won low net for the day among all players, followed by Tom Frantz in second and Rodney Wyatt in third.
Lisa Hutchins successfully defended her Ladies’ Club Championship crown, with a five-stroke win over Ann Reed.
On Sept. 2, Rehoboth Beach Country Club announced its Club Champions for the 2014 season. Steven Harvey is this year’s club champion, and he also won the mixed club championship with his wife, Christina Wagamon Harvey.
Bailey Scheurer was also a double winner, taking both the Ladies Club Championship and the Ladies’ Senior Club Championship.
Joan O’Toole is this year’s Ladies’ 9-Hole Club Champion. Jack Storms is this year Men’s Senior Club Champion, and Nolan Brown won the Junior Club Championship.
RBCC Head Golf Professional Charlie Schuyler was pleased with the increase in participation and what he described as “phenomenal” course conditions. “Our Club Championships were very competitive this year highlighted with some fantastic individual performances” during what he called a “very successful Month of Champions.”
Local Club Competition Results
On Aug. 27, the RBCC Ladies held their annual Solheim Cup competition, in honor of the international women’s tournament of the same name. The inter-club contest pitted two groups of players against each other, using a format of 6 holes best ball, 6 holes scramble, and 6 holes alternate shot.
This year’s winning team included Beth Forbes, Kathleen Carroll, Elise Coar, Eileen Clark, Jeanne Allen, Carole Ann Medd, Pris Desena, Perry Drevo, Joan Crowley, Carole Shagrin, Carol Wetherhold, Sheila Halfpenny, Ella Alexander, Connie Kotula, Elaine Taylor, and Arlene Simms.
The RBCC Ladies held their regular Ladies’ Day Sept. 3. Karen Storms, Joan Crowley, Ann Cunningham, and Lyn Webster won first net with their team score of 119. Sally Fogerty won first net individual with her 65. Pauline Porter, Melissa Fitzgerald, Dale Lipnick, and Bailey Scheurer won first gross with their team total of 157. Scheurer also won first gross individual with her 79.
Delaware State Golf Association fundraiser tournament Oct. 6
The Scholarship Fund for the Delaware State Golf Association needs to be replenished, so the DSGA is holding another tournament fundraising event Oct. 6 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. The event begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start for the onebest ball of four format.
Players without USGA handicaps will be scored under a modified Callaway scoring system. The tournament includes the lunch, the round, a post-round cocktail hour, tournament prizes and a silent auction. Playing fees are $150 per player, and singles are welcome.
