DSU Invitational a success at Kings Creek CC

The Delaware State University women’s golf team held its first-ever Hornets’ Classic at the Creek invitational tournament Sept. 19-20 at Kings Creek Country Club. Sixty-five golfers from eleven colleges and universities played in the two-day, 54-hole competition.
“It was just fantastic – a great event,” said Hornet head coach Rick McCall, Jr. “I am really pleased with the reaction to Kings Creek and the tournament from the other coaches. The staff at the club, from the groundskeepers, the food and beverage people, and the golf pros were beyond everything I’ve ever seen. They were all top-notch.”
The tournament created its own highlights for the Lady Hornets. Anna Ferreyra-Heit (+6) defeated three other golfers in a four-hole playoff to take medalist honors for DSU. Her Hornet teammates also contributed, leading to DSU’s 4th place finish in the team category.
“This was great for Ana, especially considering all the hard work she puts in, more than most college golfers. It was well-deserved,” McCall said. “I’m proud and happy for her.”
The college golf world noticed. After the tournament Ferreyra-Heit’s national rankings rose to the low 420s in a field of over 4,000 collegiate golfers.
The Lady Hornets who also played in the team and/or individual categories included Sydney Scraba (T-15), Amber Pennington (21), Estelle Verny (T-27), Julie Gauvin (T-32), Claudia Hofmeister (T-39), Emily Murray (43) and Nimah Narinsingh-Smith (61).
Sacred Heart University won first place in the team competition. The other schools and their order of finish included Howard University (2), Lehigh University (3), Fairleigh Dickinson University (5), Merrimack College (6), Long Island University (7), Alabama State University (8), Mount St. Mary’s (9), LaSalle University (10) and Wagner College (11).
McCall also appreciated the Kings Creek CC membership. “The members were equally excited to see these women perform. It was really nice to receive their support,” he said.
The event’s success led to a quick decision by the club to host the Invitational next year, which McCall quickly accepted. “As the other coaches told me, this is a great place to hold a tournament. It’s short, tight, and challenging for women’s golf,” he said.
DSGA Senior Amateur Championships
Congratulations to Rufino Rosal of Smyrna and Nicoll Keeney of Wilmington for their respective victories in the Delaware Senior Amateur Championships at Wild Quail Golf & Country Club Sept. 19-20.
Several Cape Region men participated, with several finishing well among the four flights set up for the event.
Michael Polise of The Peninsula G & CC took fifth in the second flight. Jeff Baxter of Cripple Creek G & CC finished 11th, with Andrew MacLean of Bayside Resort GC in 12th.
In the third flight, Stan Zabytko of Mulligan’s Pointe finished second. Joseph Sabelhaus of Bayside Resort took 6th and Steve Morgan of Cripple Creek finished 11th. Mulligan’s Point owner Pete Townsend came in 14th, and yours truly finished three spots back of him.
Doug Smith of Mulligan’s Pointe won the fourth flight, with Mark Yoder of Heritage Shores in 9th.
ECCO golf shoes
ECCO BIOM C4
Danish shoe company ECCO has had a long presence in the Cape Region at the Tanger Outlets on Route 1. In addition to everyday wear, the company also sells its golf shoes at the Outlets, which is not always the case with other golf shoe lines with connections in the local area.
At this year’s PGA Merchandise Show I met with Shanna Benson, an ECCO Senior Field Sales representative.
We focused on the newest iteration of its Hybrid line, called the BIOM C4, which launched last April.
“Hybrid” is ECCO’s name for what other shoe companies call “spikeless.” Non-spiked golf shoes make up about half of the total national golf shoe sales.
The BIOM (think “biomechanical”) molds uppers and outsoles into a one-piece unit without glue or stitching. As in prior models, Goretex fabric adds waterproof protection within the shoe.
Benson said this year’s model permits the use of substitute orthotics for a better fit for those needing that form of assistance. In addition, the uppers now feature what she called “super stretchy” sides where the foot enters the shoe, to make it even easier to put them on or take them off.
The C4s suggested retail price is $240, in several color schemes for men and women.
Local club competition results
The Kings Creek CC Ladies 9- and 18-Hole groups played a joint shamble 2 best balls of 4 event Sept. 22.
Gale Dibona, Sara Cavendish, Patricia Davis, and Arlyce Dubbin (blind draw) won first place. Jeannine Doane, Melanie Pereira, Mary Lou Kupfer, and Candy Robinson (blind draw) took second. Marilyn Hewitt, Katie Heintz, Lisa Gercenstein, and Sherry Schaffer (blind draw) finished third.
The Mulligan’s Pointe Ladies 18-Hole group played a low gross/low net game Sept. 20.
Sue Ahern, Diane Braver, and Maxine Ansbach won low gross in the first division. Brenda Joyce, Linda Townsend, and Tammy Findlay won low net.
Dottie Pope, Kathy Hudak, and Carmela Boyle won low gross in the second division. Nancy Mawhinney, Pam Pichola, and Kathy Marks won low net.
