Local Christmas golf gift opportunities
December 13, 2013
Less than two weeks remain until Christmas, but there’s still time to find something nice among the golf stores, golf courses, and pro shops in the Cape Region for your golf-loving friends and family members.
Ruddo’s Golf, on Route One next to the Ocean Boulevard Furniture store, is the only local store dedicated to golf. PGA Professional Bret Marshall that runs the place, with help from longtime staffer Pete McCaffery.
McCaffrey said recently that “Everything’s on sale,” and from the looks of things inside the store, he’s absolutely right. Even items that were already marked down to clearance sale prices have another 10% knocked off.
There are plenty of NFL logo items for the football-crazy golfer, including shirts and club head covers. If your golfing buddy is a loyal college alumnus of a major university, you will also be able to find a way to commemorate that fact.
TaylorMade golf bags are on deep discount, as are Adidas golf shoes.
The store is fully stocked with the usual variety of golf items, including clubs, balls, shoes, shirts and other apparel, and golf-related gifts. Hours of operation in the run-up to Christmas will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call Ruddo’s at 302-703-2555.
The Cape Region’s full-size public golf courses, including The Rookery, Baywood Greens, and Old Landing, will also be happy to provide additional suggestions, such as gift certificates for tee times when the weather is better. For example, the Baywood Greens pro shop carries a variety of golf brands, such as Titleist, Callaway, Mizuno, and Cobra. Their golf clothing lines include offerings from Cutter & Buck, Adidas, UnderArmour, and Greg Norman.
You can also buy gift cards at the shop, in case you’re not exactly sure what to buy. For more information, call the Baywood Pro Shop at 302-947-9800. Old Landing’s phone number is 302-227-3131.
In addition to the Pro Shops at both Rookery North and Rookery South, the folks at The Rookery are hosting a special guest on Sunday, December 22. There will be a Breakfast with Santa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rookery South restaurant. Small fry who wish to see him can bring their parents or grandparents along. The breakfast buffet is served from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and of course the pro shop next door will be open for any last-minute gift-buying decisions. Options include gift cards, memberships, and certificates for golf lessons when the weather improves.
To reach the Rookery, call 302-684-3000.
Don’t forget the other public golf courses in the Cape Region, all of whom would welcome some Christmas-related opportunities to serve you. Marsh Island Golf Club, on Camp Arrowhead Road, features a pleasant dining atmosphere at the Pelican Grille restaurant in the clubhouse, in addition to its short, challenging golf course. It can be reached at 302-945-4653.
American Classic Golf Club lies just to the west of Route One, off Postal Lane, and offers 9 holes on its executive-length layout. Its number is 302-703-6662 (americanclassicgolf.com). Midway Par 3 remains in operation as a longtime Cape Region favorite outside Lewes on Route One, at 302-645-7955 (midwaypar3golf.com).
The Milton area is well served by the folks at Stenger’s Shamrock Par 3 Golf, on Saw Mill Road. For more information, phone 302-684-1808 or go to ShamrockPar3Golf.com.
For the Cape Region golfers who belong to the private country clubs, such as Kings Creek or Rehoboth Beach, you might also see about a visit to their pro shops.
Many golfers enjoy wearing a logoed shirt or hat from these popular layouts.
Just bear in mind that daytime hours are the rule for all of these places, and the sooner you go, the better the selections will be.
