Still time for Christmas golf goodies
December 18, 2009
Christmas Day is only a week away, but fortunately there are several good local options for finding a nice golf-related gift for the Cape Region players on your list.
The recession’s impact on retail sales generally has also hit the golf stores, so the operators will be very glad to see you.
Joe Joe Romano of Tee II Green Golf, on Rehoboth Avenue Extended just outside Rehoboth Beach, said, “All of our club sets are on sale. We also have select golf balls on discount, and every driver and fairway wood and hybrid is on sale.”
Romano said they have good deals on golf shirts, windbreakers, and rain suits. He specifically mentioned Mizuno wool outerwear sweaters.
For the technologically inclined, the store is taking $50 off their Golf Buddy GPS systems, both in black and white and color screens. Romano also said they will give buyers a free Antigua shirt with the purchase of two dozen Bridgestone golf balls, which is a nice tie-in.
He said they have “numerous putters” on sale, and men’s and women’s golf shoes are also discounted.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 10 to 7 on Thursday and Friday, and 10 to 5 on the weekends. You can call them at 226-8333.
Pete McCaffrey of Ruddo’s Golf said their shop on Route One, near Munchy Branch Road, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Saturday, and from 10 to 6 on Sunday. “Everything’s pretty much on sale,” he said.
McCaffrey said their Bushnell laser range finders and GPS range finders are good gifts for a simple reason. “It’s the kind of thing that a lot of golfers would like to get, but might not buy themselves.”
He also said their Nike golf balls are on sale for 2 boxes for $60, a good deal considering that a single box is usually $45. McCaffrey also said their NFL and Major League Baseball logo items are very popular, including headcovers, visors, hats, and balls.
Ruddo’s has quite a few drivers on sale, with many offered at $199.00. When you consider that the club companies often put out new models every nine months or so, discounting is inevitable, and a little patience can save a lot.
The store also sells gift certificates, for those who like to give their golfers the option to pick out something for themselves. You can reach Ruddo’s at 227-1520.
Laine Tunnell, a pro shop staffer at Baywood Greens golf course near Long Neck, said they have several Christmas specials. These include 50 percent off on men’s and women’s summer golf shirts. The clothing lines include Cutter & Buck, Page and Tuttle, Ashworth, and Izod.
Tunnell also mentioned that the club is holding a New Year’s Day shopping spree raffle. Tickets are one for $10 or 3 for $25 dollars. First prize is the shopping spree, and the next prizes include framed prints of different golf holes at Baywood. The drawing is to be held on New Year’s Day.
Baywood is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can be reached at 947-9800.
Butch Holtzclaw, the head golf professional at The Rookery near Milton, said “A lot of stuff’s on sale.” He highlighted a few items, such as a 40% off sale on select apparel for men and women.
“Our putters are 20% off, and our shoes are 25% off. We also sell gift certificates, of course, and also lessons,” Holtzclaw said.
The Rookery pro shop is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting, and you can check by calling 684-3000.
Don’t forget to also check out the options at the private club pro shops in the Cape Region. For example, Ron Barrows, the longtime golf pro at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, said they’re selling the Laser Link GPS system. “We also have a big sale on golf clubs,” he said.
The private clubs also specialize in logo items, always a popular gift for golfers.
